Ten years ago I found my inspiration while dining in a Mexican restaurant. I saw a backsplash mosaic of a skeleton playing guitar in the desert and my brain was filled with images of skeletons doing funny things that I wanted to capture in my own mosaic pieces. I started experimenting with different materials from ceramic tiles to leather and even adding jewelry to embellish my characters. Every piece is unique and a celebration of colors with multicultural influences.
Pottery is another expression of art I always wanted to explore. Hand-building is my favorite technique. I have begun my journey working with clay and experimenting with mixed media combining mosaics and ceramics
In Latin American culture skulls and skeletons represent death and revival. Death should be an event full of joy. No person deserves to be remembered only through mourning and sadness but should be celebrated and loved to keep their soul alive.
I enjoy working with skeletons because no matter the race of the character I am portraying, I make a skeleton and the color of the skin is not important because, underneath our ephemeral skin, we are all the same, skeletons.
